What is it
Many people develop a fungal nail infection at some point in their life. It's not usually serious, but can be unpleasant and difficult to treat.
The infection can cause the nail to become discoloured, thickened, brittle and distorted.
The medical name for a fungal nail infection is onychomycosis
What causes it
Incorrect cutting of the nail, ill fitting footwear, trauma to the nail.
What are the symptoms
Symptoms are varied and can include some or all of the following: thickened nail, crumbly texture, discolouration; sometimes the nail may become detached altogether. Secondary infection of the surrounding tissue can cause redness, irritation and inflammation.
What are the treatment options
Maintaining the nail on a regular basis to help alleviate the pain.
To save you time and money, we recommend a fungal nail test (£45) before commencing treatment. This confirms the presence of fungal nail prior to commencing any treatment and can be done whilst you wait with results in minutes.
Treatment options include:
1) Clearanail treatment. This involves creating microscopic pores in the infected, thickened nail which allows anti-fungal preparations, like Lamisail, to penetrate the tough, generally impervious nail. The anti-fungal medication is able then to reach the tissue below the nail, the nailbed, where the infection resides, ie the "root" of the problem, to fight it more effectively.
A major advantage of this treatment is that it delivers quicker results than topical preparations on their own which in turn makes the treatment more convenient and affordable for patients.
